How a good story might save you and your brand from oblivion

It’s hard to ignore the power of storytelling, stoies document our histories, educate and entertain us, and at their best they inspire us into action. In the cluttered world of individuals and brands fighting for attention, a great story could be the way to get in front of the crowd. In this presentation you will learn what makes a great story, how to develop your own, and explore the changing approach to storytelling and story making.

Break away from your desk to visit an amazing studio and listen to local design leaders present original perspectives that will inspire, shift or interrupt your relationship with the design space. After the presentation there will be a chance to ask questions and pick the brains of some of Seattle's brightest design minds.

Join us at Belltown Pub! AIGA members and friends will meet colleagues from IxDA for a drink. IxDA serves the needs of the international Interaction Design community (more info at: www.ixda.org).

So join us as we get together to swap ideas, vent about impossible deadlines, share inspiration, and have a laugh. No reservation needed, no cover charge but must be 21+ and attendees are responsible for their own tabs. Belltown Pub has a pool table, foosball, and will offer our group happy hour deals until 8. It's sure to be a great time!

Every year some of our hard-working board members roll out of their biennial positions to allow a new batch of members to take on their duties. Just before they do, though, we hold our Open Board Meeting where enthusiastic, collaborative, rock star members like yourself can chat with out-going board volunteers about what it takes to kick-ass as an AIGA Seattle Director or Chairperson. This meeting will take place

Need motivation to bike to work? Then May is your month! Be challenged by your fellow designers by starting or joining a 3-9 person team under the AIGA organization to take on Cascade Bicycle Club's Commute Challenge. Whether you're a road warrior or a two-wheeled neophyte*, we want you out of your car out there riding with us. It's FREE and you only need to commit to FOUR rides for the month (but we bet you'll do more)! Just track the miles you ride, log them into the simple online tool, then watch as you and your team climb the ranks.

To join in, you have two choices. You can either:

1. Find 3-9 friends/coworkers/colleagues, then create your own team as a Captain and send your other teammates an invite. Just select AIGA as the "Organization" you are joining under.
2. Or if you can't find 3 others to join you, just post a message on the AIGA Seattle Facebook Event Page that you want to join a team and we'll do our best to help you find a spot!

Reality Check is designed to provide students an opportunity to receive constructive feedback from experienced design professionals. This is not a job fair. The goal of the event is to practice networking, get feedback on your work and to practice telling your story. Shake hands, listen intently, inquire thoughtfully, and position yourself professionally.

DESIGN TO IMPROVE SOCIETY
AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Designer. Entrepreneur. Scientist. Artist: Are you Compostmodern? Explore the role of design in creating a more resilient and regenerative world that works better for individuals, communities, society and the planet.

Each year we invite a diverse panel of design professionals to speak to students and young professionals about career paths in design. This year’s panel will share valuable insight about the interview process, what design businesses look for in portfolios as well as future employees, and useful tips for getting a job. We’ll also talk about some of the varied possibilities in the design professions that they themselves have explored.

Doors open at 6:30PM, panel begins at 7PM. Limited parking is available.

Before computers and modern offset printing, reproducing words on paper required the touch of human hands. Watch two amazing documentaries – "Typeface" and "Linotype: The Film" – tell the story of how technology changed graphic design and publishing in the 19th and 20th century.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Hamilton Wood Type Museum, to help pay for the relocation of their historic wood type collection and antique letterpresses.
