Thursday, December 7 / 7pm Joseph Goebbels™ is a daring project by Serbian designer Aleksandar Macasev that debuted at the 2005 Belgrade Summer Festival (BELEF). The idea for the artwork in the form of a media campaign took root when Mr. Macasev speculated that the strategy of Goebbels, the inimical WWII propagandist, is, in fact, utilized by the movers of our media culture today. "A message repeated a thousand times becomes a truth." Mr. Macasev challenges us to consider Goebbels' mantra in neutral terms, to look for ways we are influenced—from blue jean commercials to political speeches—in a similar manner today. He addresses the power and impact of graphic design in mass media, while challenging us to consider our moral responsibility in communicating messages to the broader audience. Mr. Macasev lives and works in Belgrade, a city emerging from a turbulent and troubled past—beginning with the 1941 Nazi occupation and cycling through Tito's dictatorship and the Milosevic regime. He graduated from the University of Belgrade in 1998 with a degree in architecture, and currently teaches interactive design at the BK Academy of Arts. Previous to his teaching career, Mr. Macasev worked for Belgrade's two largest advertising agencies, BBDO and New Moment (formerly Saatchi&Saatchi). His list of international clients include Swatch, Playboy, Mirko Ilic, Karlssonwilker, and Deloitte. Please join us for an evening with rising international designer Aleksandar Macasev as he discusses his inspiration, method, and the reaction to the Joseph Goebbels™ project.
